Journey across South Vietnam
Ok, so I'm back from Vietnam. Pretty great and interesting trip. First thing you notice when you get out of Saigon International airport is the noise. Simply frightening. At first, I didn't dare cross any big street. I empathize with all the animals killded on the roads, now I know how they feel. It seems honking is a national sport and when you're in a city like Saigon (or should I say, Ho-Chi-Minh City but no one does, people only say Saigon or simply The City) that never sleeps (yeah, this one too) well honking just becomes part of the usual background noise. Second thing, the people. There are so many of them. and when you look closer, you'll see that most of them are young. yeah, demographic boom and it's scary how fast the city is growing.
But if I had to describe Vietnam in one word, it would be "contrast." Contrast in its people, in its economy, in its politics, in its scenery, in its weather, in its food, in everything. I think it's something you have to see for yourself because no word, no picture could ever render that feeling of bewilderment in front of such contrast. I wanted to know how I would feel 16 years after leaving Vietnam. Well now I know and it's mixed feelings. I love my country and I hate it at the same time. I loved being among people that actually looked like me for a change (ok, so most of them are smaller and thiner--can't help it) but I hated feeling guilty because I had so much luck than quite a lot of them. I hated feeling like a stranger anyway in the country I was born but I loved that so many people I don't remember still remember me and still treated me like I never was gone. I know that I could never live there but I'd love to go back and explore what I haven't been able to this time.
So now I'll stop rambling and show you in images. I've been in 3 cities : Dalat, Nha Trang and Saigon (often refered to as TPHCM meaning Ho-Chi-Minh City in Vietnamese).
Ok let's go !
